As the extreme weather continues , open water can be tempting—but reservoirs are extremely dangerous places to swim. ⚠️ Know the risks: - ❄️ Cold water shock – Even in summer, water temperatures can be dangerously low and trigger gasping, panic, or cardiac arrest.
- 🌊 Hidden hazards – Slopes, sudden drop-offs, machinery, debris, and strong currents are often unseen.
- 🧲 Steep sides & difficulty exiting – Many reservoirs have vertical or slippery edges, making it hard—or impossible—to get out.
- 💨 Strong undercurrents – Water flows linked to pumps and spillways can pull even strong swimmers under.
- 🚫 No lifeguards – Help may not be immediately available in an emergency.
✅ Stay safe: - Never enter reservoirs or restricted water areas.
- Stick to designated, supervised swimming locations.
- Keep children and pets well away from the water’s edge.
- In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Fire Service.
